Who looks after broadband customers
Independent of every provider in this directory. If something goes wrong, these are the people to know. Our complaints guide walks you through it.

About UK broadband providers and this directory
How many broadband providers are there in the UK?
We track 351 active broadband providers in the November 2026 edition: 12 national ISPs, 46 independent ISPs, 103 altnets, 58 wireless ISPs, 5 satellite providers, 111 business ISPs and 16 wholesale networks. The number moves every month as new networks launch and others merge or close, so each edition lists what changed.
How many of them can I actually get at home?
Most homes can choose from the national providers, which sell over the Openreach network that reaches almost every address, plus any altnet or wireless network that has built in the area. The only way to know is to check your postcode. Our comparison then shows the deals from the 30+ providers we carry that serve your address, cheapest first.
What is an altnet?
An altnet (alternative network) is an independent company laying its own broadband network, usually full fibre, instead of renting lines from Openreach or Virgin Media. Many sell to homes directly; some only sell to other providers.
How do you check each provider?
On the first working day of each month we open every provider's website, read its Companies House record and its Trustpilot profile, and check trade news for launches, mergers and closures. Every change is checked against its source before it is published.
What does dormant mean?
A dormant record is a provider that has closed, merged, rebranded or stopped selling broadband. We keep its page, say what happened and when, and point you to the provider that took over where there is one.
Do providers pay to be listed?
No. Every provider is listed free and nobody can pay for a better position. We earn commission when you switch through our comparison, and that never changes the order deals are shown in, which is cheapest first.
A new edition every month
Each edition is dated and kept, so you can see how the market moves. This is edition 1, figures to 2 November 2026. The charts, method and full change log are on the market insights page, and the headline count feeds UK Broadband in Numbers.
Tell us and we fix it
Provider changed hands, closed, or missing from the list? Email editor@broadbandswitch.uk and we reply within five working days. Providers are listed free, with no paid placement.
