Best broadband for GTA 6 in the UK

Short answer: for GTA 6 you want full fibre (FTTP) with a download speed of at least 100Mbps, upload of 20Mbps or more, ping under 30ms and stable jitter under 5ms. Speed only decides how fast you install roughly 200GB. Ping, jitter and latency under load decide how the game actually feels.

On a 900Mbps full fibre line a 190GB install takes about 28 minutes. On a 36Mbps part fibre line the same download takes about 11 hours 44 minutes. Pre-load opens on 12 November 2026, so that is the date your connection needs to be ready for, not launch day.

How we make money. BroadbandSwitch.uk is free to use. We may earn a commission if you switch through us, and that never changes how we rank or describe a deal. Speeds shown are provider average speeds measured at peak time (8pm to 10pm), as required by UK advertising rules, and the speed at your address will vary.

Below: a 30 second driving game that measures your line while you play, download times for every UK broadband tier, the ping and jitter numbers that matter, which UK providers put you behind CGNAT, and the date you need to order by.

Sunset Run · the connection test

Drive the strip. We'll grade your line while you do.

Two separate scores, so neither flatters the other. Your driver score is your reflexes and your dodging. Your connection score comes from a probe running quietly in the background, measuring ping, jitter, throughput, and the number almost nobody tests: what happens to your ping when the line gets busy.

You look like you are on mobile data. Mobile networks add latency and nearly all of them use carrier grade NAT, so this will tell you very little about your home broadband. Try again on home Wi-Fi, or wired if you can.

What this test uses. To measure your speed and your ping under load it downloads up to about 120MB of test data. On a mobile connection we skip that part to save your data allowance, and say so in the result. Nothing is stored and no account is needed.

Browser tests are indicative, not laboratory grade. Browsers deliberately blur their timers for security reasons and a single connection cannot always fill a gigabit line. For the fullest picture, including packet loss, plug into your router and run our full speed test.

Download times

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

Assuming a 190GB install, GTA 6 takes about 28 minutes on a 900Mbps full fibre line, 42 minutes on 500Mbps, 4 hours 13 minutes on 100Mbps, 5 hours 42 minutes on 74Mbps and 11 hours 44 minutes on 36Mbps. Rockstar has not published a file size, so 190GB is our planning estimate, and real-world console downloads usually run 15 to 30 per cent slower than these best-case figures.

Broadband is sold in megabits and files are measured in megabytes, so divide by eight to convert. A PS5 or Xbox will rarely hit your full line rate, so treat every row as an optimistic ceiling rather than a promise.

File size

How big is GTA 6?

Rockstar has published no official install size. Independent estimates cluster around 150GB to 200GB for the base game, plus a launch patch of perhaps 15GB to 50GB. Plan for 200GB to 250GB of free space and you will not be caught out.

The disc trap

Buying it in a shop does not help

The physical edition is expected to ship as a download code rather than a playable disc, partly because a standard Blu-ray XL caps out at 128GB. Either way, you are downloading the whole game.

Storage

Console space is tighter than you think

A PS5 gives roughly 667GB usable, a PS5 Pro about 2TB, an Xbox Series X about 802GB and a Series S only around 364GB. On a Series S an expansion card is effectively essential.

The numbers that matter

What internet speed do you need to play GTA 6?

Online play itself uses very little bandwidth, often only a few Mbps. What decides whether it feels crisp or infuriating is consistency. These are the four numbers to know, and the targets worth aiming for.

Connection targets for demanding online games

PingOver 100ms50 to 100ms20 to 50msUnder 20msAbove 100ms you get shot from behind cover

Steady ping versus jittery ping Two latency traces. The top line is steady at about 25 milliseconds. The bottom line has the same average but swings wildly between 5 and 80 milliseconds, which is what causes rubber-banding. SAME AVERAGE PING, VERY DIFFERENT GAME Steady, 25ms average, 3ms jitter Unstable, 25ms average, 34ms jitter Illustrative traces. A game can predict a constant delay. It cannot predict chaos.
This is why two connections quoting the same average ping can feel completely different. Jitter, not the average, is usually what you are feeling when a car teleports or a shot does not register.
01 · Ping

The round trip

How long a packet takes to reach the server or another player and come back. Full fibre typically lands at 8 to 15ms, part fibre copper at 15 to 30ms, and 4G or 5G anywhere from 15 to 60ms.

02 · Jitter

The wobble

Variation in that round trip. A rock steady 60ms usually beats an average of 30ms that swings between 5 and 80. Under 5ms is where you want to be.

03 · Packet loss

The updates that vanish

Real-time games use UDP, which does not wait for a retry. A lost packet is a missed shot. Under 0.5 per cent is healthy, and 1 per cent is already spoiling things.

04 · Under load

The one nobody tests

Standard speed tests measure ping while the line is idle. The number that matters is your ping while a download or a 4K stream is running. That is what our game measures.

Bufferbloat

Why does your ping spike when someone else streams?

Because of bufferbloat. When a line fills up, older equipment stuffs hundreds of packets into an oversized queue and drains it slowly, so your game's tiny urgent packets end up stuck behind somebody's boxset. Ping can jump from 15ms to several hundred milliseconds. Modern queue management, using algorithms called CAKE or fq_codel, keeps the queue small and fixes it.

Ping before and after someone starts a large download On an unmanaged line, ping rises from about 16 milliseconds at idle to about 420 milliseconds once a download starts. On full fibre with smart queue management it rises only from 11 milliseconds to about 14 milliseconds. PING WHEN A BIG DOWNLOAD STARTS download starts Unmanaged queue up to 420ms 16ms idle Full fibre with smart queue management 14ms 11ms idle Illustrative. Grading convention: under 5ms added is excellent, under 30ms good, 30 to 60ms noticeable, beyond that disruptive.
Same household, same evening. The difference is not headline speed, it is whether the queue is managed. Full fibre plus a capable router is the combination that holds steady.
What a busy household actually demands at once Stacked demand of about 118 megabits per second from a 4K stream, a second HD stream, a video call, a cloud backup and a game download, compared against a 36Mbps line, a 74Mbps line and a 900Mbps line. ONE BUSY EVENING, ADDED UP 4K stream 25 HD 5 Call 6 Backup 12 Game download 70 Total demand about 118Mbps 36Mbps lineshort by 82Mbps 74Mbps lineshort by 44Mbps 900Mbps linecomfortable, with headroom Typical published figures for each activity. Headroom, not just "enough", is what keeps ping flat.
This is the honest case for gigabit. Not that GTA 6 needs 900Mbps, but that a house with several people in it needs headroom so nobody's evening ruins anybody else's.

CGNAT and NAT type

Which UK providers put you behind CGNAT?

Carrier grade NAT shares one public IP address between many customers. Browsing is unaffected, but incoming connections break, which can leave your console reporting Strict or Type 3 NAT, block port forwarding and make joining friends in peer-to-peer lobbies unreliable. Rockstar's online mode has historically used a hybrid peer-to-peer model, where one player hosts and everyone connects directly, so NAT type matters more in GTA than in most games. Nothing about GTA 6's online architecture has been confirmed.

Compiled from provider documentation, the ISPreview IPv6 and CGNAT survey of UK altnets and provider community forums. Altnet policies change frequently and some entries rest on community reporting rather than formal provider statements, so confirm with the provider before you order if a public IP matters to you. See our static IP guide for the full picture.

Symptom

Type 3, Strict, endless matchmaking

Xbox reports Open, Moderate or Strict. PlayStation reports Type 1, 2 or 3. Moderate or Type 2 behind a home router is normal and fine. Strict or Type 3 is where invites fail and party chat drops.

Fix

A public address, or IPv6

A public or static IPv4, or working IPv6, usually restores Open or Moderate NAT and lets port forwarding work again. Some providers will move you off CGNAT on request at no cost.

Worth knowing

Mobile broadband is almost always CGNAT

If you are using 4G or 5G home broadband as a stopgap, expect CGNAT and higher, more variable latency. Useful while you wait for fibre, but not a long-term gaming answer. See 4G and 5G home broadband.

Upload and streaming

How much upload do you need to stream your gameplay?

For a stable 1080p60 stream to Twitch you want roughly 10Mbps to 15Mbps of reliable upload, because Twitch recommends up to 6,000kbps of video bitrate and the standard advice is to use no more than about three quarters of your available upload. This is where part fibre falls down: the technology caps upload at around 20Mbps and most homes see only 8Mbps to 15Mbps, shared with everything else in the house.

Upload needed for streaming, against typical UK upload speeds Streaming 720p60 needs about 4.5Mbps, 1080p60 about 6Mbps, and 1440p about 10Mbps of video bitrate, plus headroom. Typical part fibre upload is 8 to 15Mbps while full fibre gigabit upload is often 100Mbps or more. UPLOAD NEEDED VERSUS UPLOAD AVAILABLE 720p60 stream4.5Mbps plus headroom 1080p60 stream6Mbps plus headroom 1440p stream10Mbps plus headroom Part fibre upload8 to 15Mbps, often less in practice Full fibre gigabit100Mbps plus Twitch recommended video bitrates plus the usual 75 per cent headroom rule.
If you ever want to stream, clip, or host a lobby, upload is the ceiling that decides it. This is the single clearest reason to move from part fibre to full fibre.

Timing

When should you order to be ready for pre-load?

Order by Friday 16 October 2026. A straightforward Openreach or altnet full fibre install often completes within one to two weeks, but surveys, groundwork, flats and landlord permissions can stretch it to four to six weeks. Under One Touch Switch the new provider arranges everything, with a minimum ten working day switch window and a fourteen day cooling off period on top.

Timeline from ordering broadband to GTA 6 launch day Order by 16 October 2026, allow two to six weeks for install and the One Touch Switch window, test and cable your setup in early November, pre-load from 12 November, and play on 19 November. 16 OctOrder full fibre Late OctInstall and switch Early NovCable up and test 12 NovPre-load opens 19 NovLaunch day Openreach and altnet lead times plus the Ofcom One Touch Switch window and cooling off period.
Leaving it to November is cutting it fine. Ordering in October means the line is live, tested and cabled with time to spare.
  1. Compare what is actually available at your address

Full fibre availability changes street by street. Around 82 per cent of UK homes can now get FTTP and 89 per cent can get a gigabit-capable connection, yet only about a third of premises have taken full fibre, so millions of people are on a slower line than they could have. Check your postcode.

  2. Order by 16 October and let One Touch Switch do the work

You only contact the new provider. They handle the cancellation, you do not pay notice charges beyond the switch date, and there is compensation if it goes wrong. See One Touch Switch explained.

  3. Run an Ethernet cable to the console

The single biggest improvement most people make. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have gigabit Ethernet. Use Cat 5e or Cat 6, and check the negotiated link speed in your console's network settings, because a tired old cable will quietly settle for 100Mbps.

  4. If you must use Wi-Fi, use the 5GHz band

Worth knowing that the PS5 supports Wi-Fi 6 while the Xbox Series X and S are Wi-Fi 5, so Xbox owners gain even more from a cable.

  5. Test your ping under load, not just your speed

Run the game at the top of this page, or our speed test. If your ping triples when a download starts, the problem is queue management, not bandwidth.

  6. Check your NAT type and free up 250GB

Aim for Open or Moderate. Clear 200GB to 250GB of storage now rather than deleting games at 2am while a download crawls.

  7. Pre-load on 12 November

Start the download the evening pre-load opens and launch day becomes a formality.

If full fibre is not an option

What to do when you cannot get full fibre yet

Around one in five UK homes still cannot order FTTP. You are not stuck, and several of these changes cost nothing.

Free

Go wired and fix your queue

An Ethernet cable and smart queue management on a capable router will do more for your ping under load than any speed upgrade. On a 74Mbps line with the queue managed, gameplay can feel better than on a badly configured gigabit line.

Low cost

Check cable and altnet coverage

Openreach is not the only network. Virgin Media's cable footprint and dozens of altnets reach streets Openreach has not. Availability is decided address by address, so check rather than assume.

Stopgap

4G or 5G home broadband, with eyes open

Useful while you wait, and genuinely fast in the right spot. Be aware that latency is higher and more variable, and almost every mobile network uses CGNAT, which can leave you on Strict NAT. See 4G and 5G home broadband.

Questions

GTA 6 broadband questions, answered

What broadband speed do I need for GTA 6?

For comfortable play and a quick install, aim for full fibre with at least 100Mbps download, 20Mbps upload, ping under 30ms and jitter under 5ms. The game itself uses only a few Mbps while you play. Higher speeds mainly shorten the install and give the rest of the household headroom.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

On our 190GB estimate: about 28 minutes at 900Mbps, 51 minutes at 500Mbps, 4 hours 13 minutes at 100Mbps, 5 hours 42 minutes at 74Mbps and 11 hours 44 minutes at 36Mbps. Console downloads typically run 15 to 30 per cent slower than these best-case figures, and launch week congestion will slow them further.

How big is GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published an official install size. Credible independent estimates put the base game at 150GB to 200GB, with a launch patch on top. Free up 200GB to 250GB to be safe.

Do I need a gigabit connection for GTA 6?

No. A 100Mbps full fibre line is perfectly playable. Gigabit is worth it if you want the install done in under half an hour, if several people share the connection, or if you stream your gameplay and need the upload headroom.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not at launch. GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X and S only. A PC version is widely expected later based on Rockstar's history, but no PC release date has been announced.

Will a physical copy save me from downloading it?

Almost certainly not. The physical edition is expected to ship as a download code rather than a playable disc, partly because standard Blu-ray XL discs hold only 128GB. You will be downloading the game either way.

Why is my ping fine on a speed test but terrible in game?

Usually bufferbloat. Speed tests measure ping while the line is idle, but your ping while a download or 4K stream is running can be many times higher. The fix is smart queue management on a capable router, and full fibre gives you far more room to work with.

Does CGNAT affect gaming?

It can. CGNAT shares one public IP between many customers, which breaks incoming connections and can leave your console on Strict or Type 3 NAT. That causes failed matchmaking, party chat problems and trouble joining friends, which matters more in peer-to-peer games. A public or static IP, or working IPv6, usually resolves it.

Should I switch now or wait until nearer launch?

Now. Order by 16 October 2026. Installs can take one to six weeks depending on what work is needed, One Touch Switch has a minimum ten working day window, and there is a fourteen day cooling off period. Ordering in October means everything is live and tested before pre-load opens on 12 November.

Methodology and sources

How we worked this out

Download time model

Times are calculated at eight bits per byte from the advertised line rate, with no allowance for congestion, protocol overhead or server limits, then presented as best case. We use 150GB, 190GB and 240GB scenarios because Rockstar has published no official file size. Real console throughput is typically 15 to 30 per cent below line rate.

Connection test

The tool measures round trip latency and its variation from repeated small requests, throughput from a timed multi-stream download, and latency under load by continuing to measure latency while that download saturates the line. Browsers deliberately reduce timer precision for security reasons, so results are indicative. Packet loss cannot be measured reliably in a browser without a dedicated endpoint, so we do not claim to measure it.

Provider data

CGNAT, IPv6 and static IP data is compiled from provider documentation, the ISPreview IPv6 and CGNAT survey of UK altnets, and provider community forums, and carries a last verified date. Some entries rest on community reporting rather than formal provider statements, and altnet policies change often.

Primary sources

Switching rules and compensation rates from Ofcom. Network traffic records from Virgin Media O2 and Openreach. Streaming bitrates from Twitch. Read more at rockstargames.com.

Accuracy notes. GTA 6 file size, download durations and any PC release date are estimates and clearly labelled as such. Peer-to-peer networking refers to the established behaviour of the previous game's online mode; nothing about GTA 6's online architecture has been confirmed by Rockstar.
