Beeline Broadband
Fixed wireless broadband for rural Ryedale, grown from a 2004 village Wi-Fi experiment into a network between York and Scarborough.
About Beeline Broadband
Back in 2004, two small North Yorkshire villages, Newton-on-Rawcliffe and Stape, were struggling with dial-up. Billy Garrett, a semi-retired engineer and keen radio amateur who had moved to Newton, set up an experimental outdoor Wi-Fi system for himself and his neighbours. Word spread, the network grew to about 25 homes on the edge of the North York Moors, and Beeline Broadband Ltd was formed.
Today Beeline runs a wireless network across much of the area between York and Scarborough from its base in Brawby, near Malton, and its site footer says it has traded since 2012. It advertises speeds of 30Mbps to 250Mbps. Radio coverage has gaps, so it asks new customers for their full address first, then uses mapping and link simulation software to judge whether a connection will work.
