Upload Speed for Home Security Cameras and Video Doorbells
Cameras are the one thing in a British home that live or die on upload speed, and the good news is that the manufacturers publish exactly what they need. Once you know your own upload figure, working out how many cameras your line will carry takes about a minute. Every number below comes from a UK page, and where a brand does not publish one for the UK, we say so.
The short version
- Resolution is what drives the number. Ring asks for 2 Mbps of upload at 1080p and 15 Mbps at 4K.
- The figures are per device and they add up. Two 2K doorbells need 20 Mbps between them before anything else in the house.
- A legacy FTTC line tops out at 20 Mbps upload. Full fibre starts at 30 Mbps and goes well beyond.
- UK rules guarantee a minimum download speed and let you leave if it is missed. There is nothing equivalent for upload.
- Ofcom does not even publish an average UK upload speed. It publishes download.
What upload speed do security cameras and video doorbells need?
Direct answer: it depends almost entirely on resolution, and the manufacturers publish the figures themselves. Ring's UK guidance gives 1 Mbps of upload for 720p, 2 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 1536p, 10 Mbps for 2K and 15 Mbps for 4K, and says a device needs at least 1 Mbps to work at all.
Every figure in the table below comes from the brand's own support documentation, and the final column says whether that documentation is UK-facing. Three brands do not publish a UK-specific figure, and we have marked them rather than passing off an American or New Zealand page as a British one. How many cameras will your broadband actually carry?
Direct answer: add up the published figure for every camera, then compare the total against your line's upload ceiling, keeping headroom for everything else in the house. On a legacy FTTC line that ceiling is 20 Mbps, so two 2K devices at 10 Mbps each would consume the entire budget before anyone opens a laptop.
The ceilings differ enormously by technology, and this is where most British households discover their real constraint. Note that these are advertised maximums rather than achieved speeds.

Two practical notes. Cameras rarely all upload at once, but motion events do coincide, and the moment they coincide is precisely the moment you want the footage. Does UK broadband regulation protect your upload speed?
Direct answer: no. Ofcom's Broadband Speeds Codes of Practice require a provider to state a minimum guaranteed download speed during the sales process, and give you the right to exit your contract without penalty if your download speed falls below it. There is no equivalent minimum, no point of sale disclosure requirement, and no right to exit for upload.
The 2022 codes put it plainly: within the sales process, providers must state the minimum guaranteed download speed. Ofcom's own summary of what the codes deliver describes the right to exit as applying if download speed falls below a minimum level. The 2022 update that aligned the codes with the revised General Conditions took effect on 21 December 2022 and changed nothing here.
The only upload figure anywhere in UK regulation is inside the Universal Service Obligation, which defines a decent connection as a download sync speed of at least 10 Mbit per second, an upload sync speed of at least 1 Mbit per second, a contention ratio no higher than 50 to 1, latency capable of supporting voice calls, and the capability to allow at least 100 GB of data a month. That 1 Mbit per second is not a promise attached to the package you buy. It is a right to request a basic connection where no decent one exists.
So the position is this. The number your cameras depend on is the one number your contract does not promise you, and the one number you cannot leave your contract over. It is worth knowing that before you buy the cameras rather than after.
- A minimum guaranteed download speed, stated at the point of sale.
- A right to exit without penalty if download falls below it.
- Total loss of service, under the automatic compensation scheme.
- Any minimum upload speed.
- Any obligation to tell you the upload figure when you buy.
- Any right to leave because upload is too slow for what you own.
Does Ofcom even measure upload speed?
Direct answer: not in the way it measures download. Ofcom publishes an average UK download speed, which rose from 223 Mbit per second in 2024 to 285 Mbit per second in 2025. It does not publish an equivalent UK average upload speed, nor an average upload by technology.
We went looking for it specifically, because a UK average upload figure would have been the natural other half of the comparison in this article. It is not there. The only upload figure in Ofcom's most recent Connected Nations report concerns satellite, where Starlink reported average upload speeds of around 20 Mbit per second. Upload data exists inside the underlying open datasets at sub-national level, but it is never aggregated into a headline the way download is.
That is not a scandal, and there are reasonable reasons for it. Download is what most households notice most of the time. But it does mean that if you want to know whether British homes can support the cameras British homes are buying, the published statistics will not tell you, and this is one of the few consumer decisions where the regulator's headline number is the wrong number to look at.
How much data do security cameras use?
Direct answer: it depends entirely on whether the camera records continuously or only when something happens, and the gap between the two is enormous. Google publishes both figures for its own devices, and continuous recording uses roughly a hundred times more than event based recording.
Google's UK support documentation gives monthly figures per device. A Nest Cam recording 24 hours a day uses up to 200 GB a month on the High setting and 300 GB on Max, and a Nest Cam IQ up to 400 GB. A Nest Doorbell on battery using event based recording uses as little as 2 GB a month, or 10 GB on the Premium setting.

For most UK households on unlimited fixed broadband, none of this matters much, because volume is not the constraint. It matters a great deal on 4G and 5G home broadband, where fair usage policies apply and a single continuously recording camera could take you past a threshold on its own. If your cameras run over mobile broadband, check the policy before you set anything to record around the clock.
What happens when your upload is not enough?
Direct answer: cameras usually degrade before they fail outright, which is why the problem often goes unnoticed until the day it matters.
Manufacturer guidance describes the same sequence across brands. Video quality drops as the system compresses harder to fit the available bandwidth. Live view buffers or takes several seconds to open. Notifications arrive late. Clips fail to upload and are missing from the timeline. Eventually cameras show as offline.
The awkward part is the timing. Motion events tend to coincide, because whatever triggered the front camera usually triggers the side one a moment later. So the moment your upload is under most pressure is exactly the moment you most want the footage to be there. When you size a line, size it for that minute rather than for a quiet Tuesday afternoon.
Does local storage solve the problem?
Direct answer: largely, yes, and it is the cheapest fix available. Recording to an SD card, a hub or a recorder removes the continuous upload of footage entirely. What still needs upload is remote live viewing and notifications, and those are intermittent rather than constant.
TP-Link is explicit that once configured, SD card recording on a Tapo camera continues even if the camera loses its router connection. That is a meaningful resilience point as well as a bandwidth one.

Do you need a subscription, and what does it cost?
Direct answer: for cloud based brands, generally yes if you want recordings kept. Ring devices provide some features without a plan, but video recording, event history and smart alerts require a subscription. Brands built around local storage do not need one to record.
Ring renamed its UK plans on 14 January 2026. As checked on 24 August 2026, the UK tiers are Ring Solo at £4.99 a month or £49.99 a year, Ring Multi at £7.99 a month or £79.99 a year, Ring Pro at £15.99 a month or £159.99 a year, and Ring Guard Response at £29.99 a month or £299.99 a year.
We deliberately have not published current UK prices for Google's Nest plans or for Arlo Secure, because we could not verify either on a UK page on the day of writing. Both are in the middle of changes to how they are packaged, and quoting a stale or converted figure would be worse than saying so. Check the brand's own UK page before you commit.
Is your camera legal? What UK law says about filming beyond your boundary
Direct answer: pointing a camera beyond your own boundary is not automatically unlawful, but it changes your legal position significantly. The ICO says that if your system captures only images within the boundary of your private domestic property, including your garden, data protection laws do not apply to you. Capture anything beyond that and UK GDPR does apply, and you become a data controller.
What follows from that is a set of practical duties. You should be able to explain why you are using the camera, capture no more than you need, let people know recording is taking place, provide footage in most cases if someone whose image or audio you have captured asks for it, delete recordings regularly or automatically, and stop recording a person who objects where there is no legitimate reason to continue.
Audio deserves separate thought. The ICO treats sound as more intrusive than images and advises against recording it on most home systems. In Fairhurst v Woodard, an Oxford County Court case decided on 12 October 2021, a homeowner's cameras were found to have processed audio unlawfully because the recording range extended well beyond his own boundary, and claims in harassment and data protection both succeeded. Two important caveats: it is a county court decision and therefore not binding precedent, and the figure of £100,000 that circulates alongside it was not a damages award in that judgment. If you do not need audio, turning it off is the simplest way to reduce your exposure.
Is your camera secure?
Direct answer: it should be, because since 29 April 2024 UK law has required it. Internet connected cameras and video doorbells are relevant connectable products under the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 regime.
Three requirements matter to you as a buyer. Universal default and easily guessable passwords are banned, so a camera should either ship with a unique password or force you to set one. Manufacturers must publish a way to report security vulnerabilities. And they must state the minimum period for which the product will receive security updates, which is worth checking before you buy, because a camera with a short support window is a camera with an expiry date. How do you test your own upload speed properly?
Direct answer: test over a wired connection to the router rather than over Wi-Fi, so that you measure the line and not the wireless, and test at several times of day.
Three things make a test misleading. Testing over Wi-Fi measures the weakest link in your house rather than what your provider delivers. Testing only in the middle of a weekday morning misses evening congestion, which is when a camera network is most likely to be doing something useful. And a single test to a nearby server can flatter the throughput you would actually get to a camera manufacturer's cloud servers.
Once you have a figure you trust, compare it against the total of every camera you own or plan to buy, not against a single device. Ring publishes a useful set of bands for its own devices: more than 10 Mbps is good, 5 to 10 Mbps is okay, and under 5 Mbps is poor. What should you actually do?
Direct answer: add up what your cameras need, test what your line gives you, and if the first number is bigger than the second, either move recording to local storage or move to full fibre.
For most households the honest answer is the second one. A legacy FTTC line gives you 20 Mbps of upload at absolute best, and that is a hard ceiling no router, mesh system or camera setting can lift. Full fibre starts at 30 Mbps upload on the entry tier and runs to 110 Mbps and beyond, which is more than any domestic camera system will ever ask for. It is the one change that fixes the problem permanently rather than managing it.

What got me while writing this was going to look for the UK's average upload speed and finding that nobody publishes one. We know the average download to the megabit. We know full fibre coverage to the decimal place. Upload, the number that decides whether a doorbell records the person at your door, is simply not measured at a headline level, and it is not guaranteed in your contract either. Millions of us have bought devices whose entire usefulness rests on a number the industry does not promise and the regulator does not report. That gap will close eventually. Until it does, the only person checking is you.
