2Gb and 8Gb Broadband: Read the Upload Number Before You Pay
In a fortnight, three things happened. EE became, in its own words, "the first major UK provider to offer broadband speeds of up to 8Gbps on next-generation XGS-PON technology". YouFibre cut its symmetric top tier from £99.99 to £50 a month. And Virgin Media put a 2Gbps product on the map whose advertised upload is listed below that of its own cheaper tier. Together they turn multi-gig from a press release into a real buying decision, and the deciding column is upload. This guide compares every above-gigabit tier now sold, explains why the uploads differ so wildly, flags the two products sharing one name, and ends with the household test for whether any of it is worth your money.
The short version
- Upload is the column that matters. Downloads on these tiers are all far beyond household need. Uploads run from 100 Mbps to fully symmetric.
- Cheaper does not mean slower here. A symmetric 7 to 8Gbps package at £50 a month sits alongside a 2Gbps package at £49.99 with a listed 100 Mbps upload.
- Check which Gig2 you are being offered. The hybrid version lists 100 Mbps upload; the full fibre version lists 200 Mbps.
- The kit is catching up. EE's 8Gbps customers will probably receive a temporary third-party router, because the final hub is not ready.
- Footprints are tiny. A handful of towns each. Availability at your address decides this, not the headline.
What is actually on sale above one gigabit
Direct answer: five or six tiers from three providers, at prices from £30 to £75 a month, with wildly different upload figures.

Two honest notes on that table. First, on the Gig1 price: thinkbroadband cites £27.99 a month, and when we checked virginmedia.com/broadband directly on 9 August the advertised Gig1 line read "Currently £31.99 a month, then £92 a month thereafter". Promotional prices differ by channel and change constantly, which is precisely why the upload column is more durable than the price column when you are comparing technologies. Second, we have not separately verified the upload figure on YouFibre's £30 tier, so the table says so rather than assuming the symmetry that applies to its top package.
Why the uploads differ by a factor of eighty
Direct answer: because upload tells you which network the product runs on, and download does not.
Full fibre built on XGS-PON can carry very high upload speeds, up to fully symmetric, because the technology is not fundamentally lopsided. Cable networks are. They were designed in an era when households consumed far more than they sent, and their capacity is divided accordingly. Two packages can therefore advertise a similar download while sitting on completely different engineering, and the upload figure is where that shows.

Advertised upload speeds, same scale
Figures as reported by the sources in the table above, 10 August 2026. The top bar is capped for display; the package is symmetric.
The cheapest package on this chart has the fastest upload. That is the single most useful thing to know before comparing multi-gig deals on download speed alone.
The two products called Gig2
Direct answer: one runs on old cable, one runs on full fibre, and their advertised uploads differ. Establish which one you are being sold.
When Virgin Media's new 2Gbps service was mapped on 9 August 2026, thinkbroadband recorded that the hybrid product "utilises its old DOCSIS 3.1 network" and warned explicitly that "This is not to confused with Gig2 Full Fibre product", which runs on XGS-PON. The full fibre version lists "2000 Mbps download, 200 Mbps upload". The hybrid lists an average 2000 Mbps download and an average 100 Mbps upload, at £49.99 a month on a 24 month contract, across around 250,000 premises in Andover, Blackburn, Darwen, Ipswich, parts of Newcastle Upon Tyne and North Shields.
And here is the detail that started this article. In thinkbroadband's words: "Oddly maybe because Virgin Media O2 is waiting on more monitoring data, the upload speed of the Gig2 Fibre service at 100 Mbps average speed is listed as slower than the much cheaper Gig1 service."
We are quoting both halves of that sentence deliberately. The listed figure genuinely is lower than the cheaper tier's 104 Mbps average, which is a real problem for anyone comparing packages on published numbers. But the analyst who spotted it offers a plausible innocent explanation in the same breath: advertised averages are built from measured data, and a brand new product has less of it. The figure may well move.
The consumer lesson survives either way, and it is a simple one. Two products share a name, sit on different networks, and advertise different uploads. Check which is available at your address, and check the upload figure on the day you buy, because that is the number doing the real work.
The ceiling is usually inside your house
Direct answer: a standard gigabit Ethernet port cannot carry more than about one gigabit, so multi-gig only shows up if every link in the chain is up to it.
This is the part the speed headlines skip. A multi-gig line arrives at a box on your wall, passes through a router, then travels to your devices over cable or Wi-Fi. If any link in that chain tops out at a gigabit, so does everything downstream of it, no matter what you are paying for. A single laptop on Wi-Fi in another room is not going to see 8Gbps, and in most homes it will not see two either.
How new all this is showed up plainly in EE's own launch. Customers on the 2.3Gbps tier receive "EE's existing Smart Hub 7 Pro router", while ISPreview reported that those "opting for the top 8Gbps package will probably continue to receive a temporary router, currently from TP Link", with the final EE hub for that tier "still a few months away from being ready for launch". The same report noted that anyone taking these services "will also require an engineer visit to install one Openreach's latest 10Gbps capable Optical Network Terminals (ONT)".
None of that is a scandal. It is simply what the leading edge looks like, and it is worth knowing before you sign a 24 month contract. Three questions answer it: what router comes with the package, what its port speeds are, and whether the devices you actually care about can connect at more than a gigabit. If the answer to any of them is no, you are buying a number rather than a benefit. So should you buy one?
Direct answer: probably not yet, and the reason is a compliment to what you already have.
A gigabit connection already carries more than a busy family home draws at its peak. Doubling or octupling it changes nothing you would perceive in streaming, browsing, calls or gaming. There are three honest reasons to consider one anyway, and they are worth stating plainly because they are real.
When an above-gigabit tier genuinely earns its place
- You send a lot of data out of the house. Video work, large cloud backups, big files to clients. This is the upload case, and it is the only one where the technology difference is felt daily.
- Your household is genuinely dense and simultaneous. Many heavy users at once, wired, on modern kit. Even then, the honest comparison is against gigabit, not against your old line.
- It is simply the best value at your address. This now happens. A symmetric multi-gig package at £50, or an 1800Mbps package at £30, can undercut slower tiers from other providers, in which case take the speed as a free extra rather than the reason.
If none of those describe you, the better use of the same money is almost always to check you are not overpaying for the connection you already have. That gap is bigger than most people expect, it applies to every household rather than the few thousand inside these tiny footprints, and it takes about half a minute to find out.

I have watched the industry sell download speed for twenty years, and multi-gig is where the habit finally stops making sense. Nobody's evening is improved by the second gigabit. What struck me putting this table together was not the 8Gbps headline, it was the ordering: the cheapest package on the chart has the fastest upload, and the most expensive per megabit of upload is the one with the biggest download number on the poster. That is not a scandal, it is just what happens when marketing optimises for the figure people recognise. My advice is unglamorous. Look at the upload, look at the router, look at whether the thing is even available at your door, and if the answer to the last one is no, spend the ten seconds finding out whether you are overpaying for the perfectly good gigabit you already have. That is where the money actually is.

Both are available in small footprints only, so availability at your address matters far more than the headline figure.
Why is the upload speed on some 2Gb packages so low?
Because the underlying network differs. Products built on full fibre using XGS-PON can offer high or fully symmetric uploads. Products delivered over older cable technology are typically far more asymmetric, with download many times higher than upload. That is why two packages advertising a similar download can differ by a factor of eighty on upload, and why upload is the figure that actually tells you which technology you are buying.
Does Virgin Media's Gig2 have a slower upload than Gig1?
On the advertised figures for the hybrid Gig2 Fibre product, yes, and it was flagged when the product was mapped on 9 August 2026. thinkbroadband noted that the upload speed of the Gig2 Fibre service at 100 Mbps average speed is listed as slower than the much cheaper Gig1 service, whose average upload is listed at 104 Mbps, and suggested this may be because Virgin Media O2 is waiting on more monitoring data. Treat it as a figure to check at your own address rather than a settled fact.
What is the difference between Gig2 Fibre and Gig2 Full Fibre?
They are two different products with similar names. The hybrid Gig2 Fibre runs over Virgin Media's older DOCSIS 3.1 cable network, with an advertised 2000 Mbps download and 100 Mbps average upload. The separate Gig2 Full Fibre product runs over XGS-PON full fibre and lists a 200 Mbps upload against the same 2000 Mbps download. Can my router and devices actually use 2Gb or 8Gb broadband?
Only if every link in the chain can carry it. A standard gigabit Ethernet port cannot pass more than about one gigabit no matter how fast the line is, so multi-gig services need higher-rate ports and modern Wi-Fi to show any benefit, and a single laptop over Wi-Fi will rarely approach these figures. EE's own launch showed how new this is: the 2.3Gbps tier ships with its Smart Hub 7 Pro, while ISPreview reported that 8Gbps customers will probably continue to receive a temporary router, currently from TP Link, with the final hub still a few months away. What is symmetric broadband and does it matter?
Symmetric means the upload speed matches the download speed. It matters if you regularly send large amounts of data out of your home, for example uploading video, backing up to cloud storage, or working with large files remotely. For streaming, browsing and ordinary video calls it makes little practical difference, because those are download heavy. Among the above-gigabit tiers now sold, uploads run from 100 Mbps to fully symmetric, so it is the single most useful column when comparing them.
Is 8Gbps broadband overkill?
For a home, on today's usage, yes in almost every case. No mainstream domestic activity draws anything close to it, and the practical ceiling is usually the equipment inside the house rather than the line coming into it. The honest reasons to consider one are a genuinely upload heavy job, a household that moves very large files often, or simply that a symmetric multi-gig package happens to be the best value available at your address, which does now happen.
Where can I get multi-gig broadband in the UK?
Only in small and specific areas so far. EE listed its launch areas as Guildford, Woking, Brookwood, Puttenham, Clandon, Shere and Worplesdon, and said the service is due to expand further in the near future. Virgin Media's hybrid Gig2 Fibre launched to around 250,000 premises across Andover, Blackburn, Darwen, Ipswich, parts of Newcastle Upon Tyne and North Shields. Availability changes constantly, so an address level check is the only reliable answer.
Do I need a new ONT for multi-gig broadband?
On full fibre, quite possibly. Reporting on EE's launch noted that customers will require an engineer visit to install one of Openreach's latest 10Gbps capable optical network terminals, the box on the wall that the fibre terminates into. That means an appointment rather than a self install, so factor the visit into your timing.
Is multi-gig broadband better for gaming?
Not in the way most people assume. Competitive gaming is governed by latency and stability rather than raw download speed, and a gigabit connection already delivers far more headroom than any game requires. Faster downloads shorten the wait for large game updates, which is a real but occasional benefit. If gaming performance is the goal, the connection type and the home network usually matter more than the number on the package.
Will multi-gig prices come down?
They already have. YouFibre halved its top tier from £99.99 to £50 a month within days of EE launching at £74.99, which is competition working exactly as it should. That also means any comparison of these tiers ages quickly, so treat published prices, including ours, as a snapshot with a date on it and check current pricing at your own address before deciding.
Should I switch to a multi-gig package now?
Only if it is available, the upload figure genuinely suits how you work, and your equipment can carry it. Otherwise the better move is usually to make sure you are on a fair price for the speed you already have, because the gap between a drifted out of contract tariff and the current market price is worth more to most households than any speed upgrade. Check what your postcode offers before assuming faster is the answer.
