That's about two and a half times as fast. Rural UK · average download speed Starlink: 80.8 Mbps. The fastest 4G or 5G home broadband: 32.4 Mbps Opensignal users, 1 April to 29 June 2026 Opensignal is an independent company that measures mobile and broadband experience from real people's devices. For this study it compared Starlink with 41 fixed wireless providers, the 4G and 5G home broadband services sold by mobile networks, across 14 European countries. It looked at towns and the countryside separately, using tests from 1 April to 29 June 2026, and published the results on 12 October 2026. Starlink was the fastest rural option in all 14 countries, averaging 82 Mbps across them, more than twice the rural average for 4G and 5G home broadband. In the UK, Starlink's rural average was about 2.7 times EE's and 3.3 times Vodafone's, by our arithmetic. You can see Starlink's current plans and prices on our Starlink deals page. In rural UK, yes. 68.1% of Starlink tests passed Opensignal's Consistent Quality check, the best rural score, ahead of EE on 62.1%, Three on 59.3% and Vodafone on 55.8%. Rural UK · Consistent Quality Starlink was the most consistent rural option too Share of tests passing Opensignal's thresholds, 1 April to 29 June 2026 Consistent Quality is Opensignal's measure of how often a connection is good enough for everyday things like HD video, video calls and online gaming. It looks at download and upload speed, latency, jitter, packet loss and how quickly pages start to load, all at once. So it shows how often a connection behaves well, not just how fast it can go. This is where the UK stands out. Across most of Europe, the best 4G and 5G home broadband beat Starlink on consistency, even in the countryside. The UK and Poland were the two countries where every 4G and 5G provider trailed Starlink on rural consistency. Opensignal is clear about the one thing that trips Starlink up: obstructions. Overhanging trees or a roof line can cause brief "micro-drops", and heavy rain can weaken the signal. So where you put the dish matters, and it's worth checking your view of the sky before you order. Fewer masts, longer distances and lower-capacity airwaves. Rural customers are often served by low-frequency bands that cover a wide area but carry less data, and they usually live further from a mast. Some plans also cap speeds. Towns vs countryside · average download speed Leave town and 4G and 5G home broadband slows down Opensignal users, 1 April to 29 June 2026 Three home broadband 60% slower in the countryside Vodafone home broadband 49% slower in the countryside EE home broadband 31% slower in the countryside Starlink (satellite) One national figure By our arithmetic from Opensignal's figures, Three's home broadband averaged 60% less download speed in the countryside than in towns, Vodafone's 49% less and EE's 31% less. Across all 14 countries, Opensignal found 4G and 5G home broadband was 40.5% slower on average outside towns. Starlink works differently. Its signal comes down from satellites rather than across the fields from a mast, so being further from town doesn't change it in the same way. Opensignal uses one national figure for Starlink for exactly that reason. What does affect Starlink is how busy the network is near you and how clear your view of the sky is. Speed caps play a part too. Opensignal points out that Vodafone sells 5G home broadband in the UK in 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps tiers. If you're in a town with a strong signal, 5G can still be a great choice, and you can compare 5G home broadband deals at your address. It's a tie. In UK towns and cities, Three's 5G home broadband averaged 81.2 Mbps and Starlink 80.8 Mbps, and Opensignal named them joint winners on both speed and consistency. 5G usually costs less, so it's well worth comparing the two. Starlink is no longer just for the hardest-to-reach homes. Opensignal says Starlink is now winning customers who switch from other providers, and is increasingly chosen by households in suburbs and towns. If you're torn between 4G and 5G, our guide to 4G vs 5G home broadband explains the difference. Hours saved on big downloads. A 100 GB game would take about 2 hours 45 minutes at Starlink's rural average speed, against nearly 7 hours at the fastest rural 4G or 5G average, by our arithmetic. One 100 GB game download · rural UK averages Starlink would finish hours ahead These are ideal times at each provider's average rural speed, so real downloads usually take a little longer. Try your own numbers in our download time calculator, or work out what your household needs with our broadband speed calculator. Speed isn't everything. For video calls and online games, steadiness counts for more than headline speed, and that's where Starlink's rural Consistent Quality score helps. More. On 22 October 2026, Starlink's home plans cost £40, £60 or £80 a month on rolling monthly terms, while the cheapest 5G home broadband in our comparison was £15 a month on a 24-month contract. £14 to £19 a month in electricity The running cost to budget for Starlink says its Standard kit draws 75 to 100 W on average. Left on all day, that's about 55 to 73 kWh a month, or £14 to £19 at Ofgem's average price cap rate of 26.32p per kWh for October to December 2026, by our arithmetic. The smaller Mini uses far less. Starlink's rolling monthly terms are a real plus: there's no long contract, and Starlink offers a 30-day trial. The flip side is that the price can change, and it did in May 2026, when the cheapest home plan rose from £35 to £40. A £10 monthly kit fee also appeared for new home customers in June and seemed to go again in July (ISPreview, 2026a, 2026b), so check the total at Starlink's checkout.
