AI and your broadband, 2026 The more you do with AI, the more reliability matters Text chat: Any stable line Typing to ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Claude uses very little data. Voice chat: Steady latency Real-time audio: dropouts and jitter matter more than speed. Live camera or screen share: Low jitter, decent upload Your video streams out in real time, like a video call. Big file uploads: Upload speed Photos, documents and video go up the slow lane of most lines. A busy household: All of the above, at once Calls, streaming, gaming and AI all share one connection. 54% of UK adults now use AI tools Ofcom, April 2026 82% of UK homes can get full fibre Ofcom, January 2026 512 MB biggest file you can give ChatGPT OpenAI You don't need gigabit broadband to benefit from AI. Typing to ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Claude uses very little data, and no AI company publishes a minimum speed. What AI does need is a reliable connection. Voice chats, live camera and screen sharing stream in real time, so steady latency and no dropouts matter more than headline speed, and sending photos, documents or video to AI tools depends on your upload speed. With 54% of UK adults now using AI tools, it's worth a quick check. Fix your Wi-Fi first, then see whether full fibre, available to 82% of UK homes, could give you a steadier connection and much faster uploads at your postcode. Key facts, checked 13 October 2026 Who this is for: Anyone in the UK using, or starting to use, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Claude at home, for work, study or everyday life. No technical knowledge needed. Direct answer: More than half of UK adults. Ofcom found 54% now use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini, up from 31% a year earlier, rising to 79% of 16 to 24-year-olds. UK adults using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini AI is reaching people through search too. Ofcom says about 30% of searches now show AI Overviews, and even among people who don't use AI chatbots, 54% read AI search summaries at least sometimes. ChatGPT alone had 1.8 billion UK visits in the first eight months of 2025, up from 368 million a year earlier. UK businesses using at least one AI technology At work, the ONS found 55% of working people in Great Britain used AI for work or education in mid-2026, more than the share of businesses using it, which suggests many people use AI on their own initiative. Direct answer: Not for typing. Text chat uses very little data, and no AI company we checked publishes a minimum speed. What AI does need is reliability: voice and live camera modes stream in real time, and sending files to AI tools depends on your upload speed. OpenAI's own fixes for ChatGPT connection errors are about stability: turn off VPNs or proxies, switch off web filters, or try a different network. So if your broadband loads web pages smoothly, it can handle text AI. Our broadband speed guide covers everything else your household does online. Direct answer: No AI company publishes a figure, so a video call is the best guide. Microsoft Teams recommends 58 kbit/s each way for voice and can send HD video in under 1.5 Mbit/s. Steady latency and no dropouts matter far more than headline speed. A stand-in for AI voice and live video: what a video call uses, each way OpenAI says ChatGPT Voice connects over UDP port 3478, the kind of traffic used for real-time audio and video. That traffic doesn't wait for lost data to be resent, so a patchy connection shows up as choppy or robotic voices rather than a slow page. Microsoft says voices that "sound like robots" can point to jitter or packet loss. Direct answer: It depends on your upload speed, which is the slow lane on most broadband. ChatGPT's largest file, 512 MB, takes over an hour at 1 Mbit/s, about 4.5 minutes at 15 Mbit/s and about 41 seconds at 100 Mbit/s. These are ideal times, by our arithmetic, so real uploads usually take a little longer. Part-fibre lines top out at 15 Mbit/s upload on Openreach's network, while most full fibre packages upload many times faster. Our guide to upload and download speeds explains the difference. Direct answer: Some does. Apple says its on-device model works offline, and Copilot+ PCs run their AI features locally. But chat assistants, live voice and camera modes, and Apple's harder requests all need the cloud. Does AI need the internet? It depends where it runs Runs on your device Needs the cloud Direct answer: Full fibre, where you can get it. It had the lowest median latency in Ofcom's 2023 measurements, gives much faster uploads than part fibre, and reached 82% of UK homes in January 2026. Who can get the best broadband for AI? Other options can work well too. Starlink reported average speeds of around 210 Mbit/s down and 20 Mbit/s up to Ofcom, and Ofcom says low Earth orbit satellites can deliver lower latency, which helps two-way video. 4G and 5G home broadband depends on your signal and how busy the mast is, so test it at the times you use AI. If full fibre has reached your street, our guide to switching to full fibre explains what's involved. Ready for a steadier connection? Call 0330 122 1223 Direct answer: Usually because of Wi-Fi, a VPN or a busy connection, rather than your broadband speed. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a cable, pause your VPN and any big uploads, and test again. AI voice keeps cutting out? Three fixes to try Move closer, or plug in Turn off what gets in the way Test, then decide If your speed and ping are fine on a cable but poor on Wi-Fi, the problem is inside your home. Our free RouterMap tool helps you find the best spot for your router, and our guide to speed test results explains ping and jitter in plain terms. Direct answer: Treat urgency as a red flag. AI makes fake emails, messages and calls more convincing, so stop, hang up, call back on a number you already know, and never move money or share a code because someone rushed you. AI makes scams more convincing. Here's how to spot them Red flags What to do UK Finance says criminals stole £1.28 billion through payment fraud in 2025, and 66% of authorised push payment fraud cases started online. Action Fraud warns that "with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), fake emails are getting more convincing all the time." Our guide to broadband and telecoms scams covers the scams that target broadband customers. Direct answer: Never share passwords, bank details, ID numbers or sensitive health records. Each AI company handles data differently, so check the app's privacy settings and data controls before you share anything personal. Apple says data sent to its Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple. Other services have their own rules, so it's worth a quick look. For children using AI chatbots, our guide to warning signs of online harm covers what parents should know. Direct answer: It could, which is why cheaper broadband matters. Good Things Foundation says 2.2 million UK adults are offline and 72% lack confidence using AI, while 70% of households eligible for a social tariff didn't know they existed. In a sentence: You don't need gigabit broadband to use AI in the UK: text chat with tools like ChatGPT uses very little data, but voice, live camera and screen sharing need a reliable, low-latency connection and file uploads depend on upload speed, which is why full fibre, available to 82% of UK homes, is the best fit where you can get it. Not for typing. OpenAI publishes no minimum speed, and its advice for connection errors is about stability, such as turning off VPNs or trying another network. No AI company publishes one. As a stand-in, Microsoft Teams recommends 58 kbit/s each way for voice, so a steady connection matters far more than speed. A reliable connection with decent upload. Google says Gemini Live with camera or screen sharing needs an internet connection, and Teams can send HD video in under 1.5 Mbit/s. Some does. Starlink reports average speeds of around 210 Mbit/s down and 20 Mbit/s up to Ofcom, and 5G depends on your signal, so test it at the times you use AI. No, but it helps. Full fibre had the lowest latency in Ofcom's 2023 measurements, offers much faster uploads, and reaches 82% of UK homes. 54% of UK adults use AI tools, up from 31% a year earlier, according to Ofcom in April 2026. Among 16 to 24-year-olds it's 79%. Around 35% of businesses with 10 or more staff use at least one AI technology, up from around 12% in late 2023 (ONS, July 2026). AI companies don't say. As a guide, a voice call at Teams' recommended rate uses about 26 MB an hour each way, and HD video about 675 MB an hour, by our arithmetic. It depends on your upload speed. A 100 MB video takes about 13 minutes at 1 Mbit/s, 53 seconds at 15 Mbit/s and 8 seconds at 100 Mbit/s, by our arithmetic.
