Back to School Broadband 2026: The Free Check Every UK Family Should Do
Every parent has a version of the same summer list. Uniform, shoes that will not fit by Christmas, a pencil case destined to be lost by October. Broadband rarely makes that list, which is odd, because it is the one item on it that every child in the house will use every single evening for the next ten months.
It is also the only one you cannot fix with a trip to the shops on the Sunday before term starts.
The short version
- Take the School Night Test below first. If you score zero, you can stop reading and enjoy the rest of the holidays.
- Find out whether it is the broadband or the Wi-Fi before you spend anything. Very often it is the Wi-Fi, and a faster package will not touch it.
- Homework platforms are not the problem. Google Classroom and Sparx use almost nothing. Video is what fills a line.
- Upload matters more than parents expect, because submitting work and joining lessons both travel the other way.
- You almost certainly do not need gigabit. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
The School Night Test: does your household have a problem?
Direct answer: think about a normal Tuesday evening in term time, around seven o'clock, when everyone is home. Count how many of these five are true in your house.
Question three is the one that catches most families out, and question four points at something quite specific that we will come back to.
Is it your broadband, or is it your Wi-Fi?
Direct answer: test the same thing twice. If a laptop plugged into the router with a cable is fast, but the same laptop on Wi-Fi in the same room is slow, your broadband is fine and your Wi-Fi is the problem. Buying a faster package will not fix that, and a great many households do exactly that anyway.
This is the single most useful thing in this guide, and it is the reason we would rather you did the diagnosis before you did any shopping. Your broadband package is the line coming into the house. Wi-Fi is the last hop from the router to the device, and it is where speed is usually lost, through walls, distance and older equipment.
Here is how to read the symptoms.

Adrian's take
Most of us only ever run a speed test at eleven in the morning when the house is empty, which is the broadband equivalent of weighing yourself before breakfast. It tells you something, but not the thing you actually want to know. The number that matters in a family home is what happens at seven in the evening with four people on it, and almost nobody has ever measured that.
Why does our broadband slow down at homework time?
Direct answer: either your household needs more capacity than the package gives at peak, or you have bufferbloat, which is a specific and very common fault that an ordinary speed test cannot detect at all.
Bufferbloat is worth understanding because it explains a genuinely maddening pattern: the connection tests fine, and then falls apart the moment somebody starts a large download. Oversized queues in routers hoard data when the line is busy, so a healthy 15 ms delay can become several hundred milliseconds. That is exactly why a live lesson stutters the second a console starts updating.

One practical note: the bufferbloat test deliberately fills your line for about eight seconds, so it uses roughly 50 MB to 500 MB of data. Do not run it on a limited mobile plan.
What good actually looks like

For context, Microsoft's own guidance for Teams asks for a round trip under 100 ms, jitter under 15 ms and packet loss under 0.1%. If your household sits in the Good band, you are comfortably inside what a school video lesson needs.
Do school homework platforms need fast broadband?
Direct answer: no, and this is worth saying plainly because it saves families money. The platforms UK schools actually use are mostly text, images and small files. Video is what fills a line, not homework.
Depending on the school, your children are likely to be using some combination of Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Seesaw in primary, Sparx Maths, Times Tables Rock Stars, Century, Bedrock Learning, Satchel One or a parent portal such as Arbor or Bromcom. Alongside those sit BBC Bitesize and Oak National Academy for revision.
Almost all of that is light. A maths platform sending a set of questions uses a fraction of what one 4K film uses. Where demand actually comes from is video: live lessons, revision videos, and above all the streaming and gaming that happens in the same house at the same time.
So if your connection is struggling, the honest diagnosis is rarely "the school has put homework online". It is far more often four people doing four different things in the same hour.
What broadband speed does each school age need?
Direct answer: a primary school child adds very little to your household's demand. A sixth former with a laptop, a phone and a habit of uploading large files adds roughly ten times as much. The table below is our estimate of what each stage typically adds at peak.
These figures are our own synthesis, derived from the published per-activity figures used in our speed calculator, which draw on guidance from Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Zoom, Microsoft and Google. Treat them as planning guidance rather than precise measurements, and add them to whatever the adults in the house are doing.

Three households, and what each one should actually do
Abstract advice is easy to nod at and hard to act on, so here are three families you may recognise.
School Night Test score: 1. Only complaint is that the tablet is slow upstairs.
What to do: almost certainly nothing to the package. This is a Wi-Fi coverage problem, not a broadband one. Move the router somewhere open and central, and if that is not enough, look at mesh rather than a faster line. Spend the money on parental controls being set up properly instead, which at this age matters far more.
School Night Test score: 4. Calls break up, uploads crawl, and everything dies when the console updates.
What to do: this household has genuinely outgrown its connection, and the giveaway is the upload complaint. Check whether full fibre has reached the address, because the upload path is the thing that changes. Run the bufferbloat test too, since the console symptom points squarely at it.
School Night Test score: 2. Fine most of the time, occasional evening lag.
What to do: two separate jobs. At home, the household is about to get smaller, so avoid signing a 24 month contract this month. Separately, sort the student, and note that what they need depends entirely on whether they are in halls or a private house. See the next section.
What broadband does a student need at university?
Direct answer: in halls, usually nothing, because broadband is normally included in the rent and many halls do not permit personal routers. In a private student house, a nine or twelve month contract fits the tenancy far better than 24 months. For a room in a shared flat or a short let, a 4G or 5G router needs no engineer and can move with them.

The mobile option is consistently under-considered by parents and is often the right answer. There is no engineer visit and no line installation, the router usually works the moment it is plugged in, and it moves with them if they change address mid-year. On timing: if it is a private house, start the order in August. A September start date arranged in September is how students end up tethering off a phone for three weeks.
How long will that actually take?

Useful for settling arguments: speeds are in megabits and file sizes in megabytes, and there are eight bits in a byte. A 100 Mbps line moves about 12.5 megabytes a second, not 100.
How can I improve our broadband without spending anything?
Direct answer: move the router, wire the device that matters most, split your Wi-Fi bands sensibly, and schedule big downloads overnight. These four cost nothing and fix a surprising share of complaints.
- Move the router. Out of the cupboard under the stairs, off the floor, away from the back of the television. Open, central and high is the aim. This is the single biggest free improvement available to most homes.
- Wire the one device that matters most. If somebody has a desk they work at every evening, an Ethernet cable to that desk removes them from the Wi-Fi contest entirely, and helps everyone else too.
- Use the bands properly. 5GHz is faster but travels less far, so it suits devices near the router. 2.4GHz is slower but reaches further, so it suits the far bedroom. Our guide to the two bands explains how to split them.
- Schedule the big downloads. Consoles and computers can be set to update overnight. This one change often removes the entire question four problem.
- Ask about a newer router. If yours is several years old, your provider may replace it free, particularly if you re-contract. It is always worth the phone call.

What if money is tight this September?
Direct answer: check whether you qualify for a social tariff, because more than nine in ten eligible UK families are not on one, almost entirely because nobody has told them these exist.
Social tariffs are discounted broadband packages for households on qualifying benefits, typically between £12.50 and £24 a month, available in around 99% of the country. If anyone in your home receives Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance or Income Support, it is worth five minutes to check.
Take-up sits at roughly 8.6% of eligible households, which is one of the most fixable problems in UK broadband. There is no penalty for asking, no effect on your benefits, and no reason to feel awkward about it. Our social tariffs guide lists who qualifies and what is available.
Separately, if you are out of contract you are very likely overpaying, and switching or renegotiating costs nothing at all. Upgrading to full fibre is frequently the same price or cheaper than the older package a household is already on, which is the happiest outcome available: better connection, smaller bill.
What if you live somewhere rural?
Direct answer: check again, because rural coverage has changed considerably in the last two years and a lot of families are working from an out-of-date assumption.
Independent networks have built hard into rural areas, and full fibre now reaches 82% of UK homes. A village that had nothing three years ago may well have fibre down one lane and not another, so an address-level check beats a postcode-level memory every time.
If no fixed line will work, 4G or 5G home broadband is usually the next option to consider, and satellite has become both cheaper and more capable, to the point where Ofcom now accepts it as a viable alternative for the hardest to reach homes. Five mistakes parents make in September
- Buying gigabit because it sounds safer. Most families are well served below 300 Mbps. Speed you never use is money gone.
- Testing over Wi-Fi and blaming the line. Always test wired first, or you may replace something that was never broken.
- Ignoring upload entirely. It is the number that actually causes the complaints about submitting work.
- Signing 24 months when the household is about to shrink. If a child leaves for university within the term, that changes the maths.
- Leaving it until the first week of term. That is the week you have least time and the industry has most orders.
Three things parents are often told that are not true

What about the landline and the home phone?
Direct answer: the old analogue phone network is being retired, with the industry working to 31 January 2027 and most homes moved during 2026. The two things worth checking now are power cuts and care alarms.
A digital phone runs through your router, so it stops working in a power cut unless you have battery backup. Ofcom requires providers to make sure customers who depend on their landline can still reach the emergency services for at least an hour during a power cut, at no extra cost, but it is not handed out automatically. You have to ask for it.
More importantly, if a grandparent lives with you or nearby and uses a care alarm or pendant, some older devices were built for the analogue network. That needs checking with the alarm supplier, not only with the broadband provider.
How do I set up parental controls before term starts?
Direct answer: in layers, because no single control catches everything, and in August rather than in October when something has already gone wrong.

One timing note: schools in Scotland typically return in mid August and Northern Ireland in late August, so if that is you, your window is genuinely shorter than it is for families in England and Wales.

Do I need gigabit broadband for a family?
