Independent profile snapshot

This extended snapshot summarises how the provider presents itself in the UK market. It supplements the dataset-led summary above.

Balquhidder Community Broadband (BCB) is a Community Interest Company that delivers Scotland's first gigabit rural village FTTP network, serving 197 premises across the Balquhidder, Ballimore and Kirkton glens within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in Stirlingshire. Launched in 2018 after an extraordinary community effort led by Director David Johnston and funded by Stirling Council (£100,000), commercial partner Bogons Ltd, volunteer labour (including a self-designed mole plough for rough terrain), EU LEADER funding and an initial Gigabit Voucher Scheme contribution, BCB laid 25km-plus of core fibre across private farmland under free wayleaves, bringing 1Gbps symmetrical broadband to an area where Openreach had previously quoted £300,000 just to reach the village hall. Residential customers pay around £35 per month for unlimited 1Gbps symmetrical FTTP, with a £135 one-off installation fee. The network routes via Openreach EAD to Strathyre exchange and then to Bogons' nuclear-bunker datacentre at Cultybraggan. BCB won the 2018 Scottish Rural Action Transport & Infrastructure Award and was a 2020 Scottish Rural Awards finalist.
